May 5, 2009 - Dolphus C. Morrison and Lamantia, Blackburn & Needham/Betz
Thoroughbreds will be $100,000 richer as a result of the Kentucky Oaks
(gr. I) and Kentucky Derby Presented by Yum! Brands (gr. I) wins by
Rachel Alexandra and Mine That Bird, respectively.
The additional bonus will be awarded by the Kentucky Breeders’
Incentive Fund, the fourth year in a row that Kentucky breds have won
the both the Kentucky Oaks and Kentucky Derby and earned the
additional KBIF money. The KBIF is overseen by the Kentucky Horse
Racing Commission.
“It is especially exciting to see Kentucky bred win two of the premier
races in the world,” said Lisa Underwood, executive director of KHRC.
“To have Kentucky horses win both the Oaks and Derby is a real boost
to our industry and to the people who work hard to continue this great
racing tradition in Kentucky.”
The KBIF was established in 2006 and is funded by a long-standing tax
on stud fees. The Derby and Oaks bonus is part of the Kentucky Grade
I Stakes component of the fund. KBIF awards earned on 2009 races will
be distributed in the first quarter of 2010.
