5 Lessons from Mine That Bird
- by Matt Douglas, Founder &
CEO, Punchbowl Software
This past Saturday was the 135th running of the
Kentucky Derby. In a shocking victory, the 50-1 longshot Mine That
Bird won the Derby. In the history of the Derby, it was the second
highest payout for a Derby winner (the only higher payout was in
1913). In the lead up to the Derby, there was hours of analysis by
countless experts, and not one of them picked Mine That Bird to Win,
Place, or Show in the Derby. So what went wrong? How did all of the
experts, pundits, and the betting public get it so wrong? Here are a
few lessons that I think we can all learn from this year’s Derby.
And it’s probably no surprise that I believe these lessons are
useful for a startup too.

Plans to block Rachel are

Assorted
Triple Crown ramblings
NTRA It’s amazing what a good underdog story can do.
Notice how Mine That Bird seems to have temporarily sparked more
interest in horse racing among the so-called mainstream sports
media? Rachel Alexandra might win the
Preakness. If she repeats her Kentucky Oaks, she wins by daylight.
And it’s a great storyline for the sport. But that doesn’t change
the opinion here that she shouldn’t be running. Why bring her back
in 15 days after such a gigantic win? What’s the hurry? What
happened to doing what’s best for the horse?

Coast looks clear for
Rachel By Jay Privman/
The Daily Racing Form
5/11/2009-Thirteen just might prove to be a
lucky number. Led by Kentucky Derby winner Mine That Bird and
Kentucky Oaks-winning filly Rachel Alexandra, a field of 13 was
expected to be entered Wednesday in the 134th Preakness Stakes, to
be run Saturday at Pimlico Race Course in Baltimore. If that number
holds, or goes no higher than 14, it will avoid one of the more
embarrassing scenarios in the history of the Triple Crown.

No coddling for Mine That Bird
By Marcus Hersh
BALTIMORE - 5/13/2009 - Kentucky Derby
winner Mine That Bird made a journey of nearly 10 hours from
Louisville, Ky., to Baltimore in a horse trailer, and arrived
just before 7 p.m. Tuesday at a racetrack he had never seen.
Many horses would have an easy morning the following day,
perhaps walking the shed row, grazing, and doing little else.
Not Mine That Bird. He was up and at 'em and out to the track
just before 7:30 on Wednesday morning, standing in the starting
gate before galloping about 1 1/2 miles. So much for a light
day.

Mine That Bird's Hollywood Connection:
Co-Owner Blach Hopes for Another Storybook Ending in Preakness
by Fran Jurga | 15 May 2009 |
The Jurga Report
Leonard Blach, DVM: the name sounds like a
veterinarian. When you look him up, he checks out. He's a Colorado
State graduate, from a ranching family, owns a New Mexico clinic. But the softspoken co-owner of Kentucky Derby winner Mine That Bird
is actually a veterinarian and race horse owner with Hollywood ties
and a movie set past that make the Mine That Bird's story one level
more surreal and storybook than they may already appear. This
veterinarian has his union card and is ready for his close-up.

Gender not the issue for
Rachel By Andrew Beyer - 2009,
The Washington Post
BALTIMORE - 5/15/2009- Millions of casual fans
will be watching the Preakness on television to see if Rachel
Alexandra can become the first member of her sex to win the race
since 1924. Many of them will surely misunderstand the nature of
filly vs. colt confrontations in horse racing. While there are valid
reasons to question whether Rachel Alexandra can win at Pimlico,
none of these questions involves her gender.

Preakness
Notes with Kelly Dennington
May 16th marks the 134th running of the Preakness
Stakes, and this year it’s a recipe for one of the spiciest Maryland
chowders to come along in a month of Saturdays. First, take 12 of
the nation’s finest 3-year-old Thoroughbreds, toss in the phenomenal
filly Rachel Alexandra, topped with seasoned Cajun jockey Calvin
Borel, who gives up his Derby-winning mount just to be with her.
Finally, for that real down-home Southwestern flavor add the
incomparable Mine That Bird. A Champion at two in Canada, MTB flew
under the radar to capture the roses and leave the rest of the field
simmering. Will he and his connections taste victory again?

The historic victory by the filly Rachel Alexandra over Kentucky

history of his own, because no jockey has ever swept the Triple
